Why Do Cats Lick People?

Cats lick their owners or other kittens, as this is a way for a cat to demonstrate its affection. To express their love they lick you. It can also be for grooming, tasting and leaving their scent on you.

The first is that like human babies, kittens get a lot of information through their sense of taste. A kitten licks to explore the world. Unlike dogs, they are not licking the salt off of your skin because that really doesn’t please them. Cats lick people and other cats (especially their kittens) because that is the way that they express their love. Licking is the opposite of when they flash their teeth or stand in a defensive stance.
